Tom Hicks and George Gillett are extremely successful American business men who own a string of sporting franchises from NASCAR to Football. In 2007 they bought European football giants Liverpool yet 3 years later they are unwelcome in the city with the club and the community facing ruin.

Also, hopefully some parallels can be drawn between the perilous situation facing our football club (and many others besides) and the failings of our present political/economic system, which is in no way concerned with rectifying global disparities of wealth but is in fact designed to further them, transferring ever greater wealth to the global elite. The collapse of capitalism is inevitable, the question is whether we transition to a system of greater fairness and equality, with reasonable autonomy for communities and an economics based upon resource management rather than profit acquisition, or in fact revert to a feudalistic system where the global elite lords it over the ‘wretched’ masses. Football clubs demonstrate to us something beyond mere capital, they engender a feeling of kinship and unity that transcend the capitalist order, but unless we fight to preserve these qualities then the football supporter will simply be another uninformed consumer, unaware and unconcerned by the agenda of those running the show.
